NITIN BALAJEE R

Research Interests:
Signal & Systems, Imaging, Computer Vision and Machine Learning, Acoustics, Audio Signal Processing, Algorithms, Data Interpretation, Mathematical modeling, ultrasonic and electromagnetic sensing in complex systems.

Research Descriptions:
Nitin works on multifunctional imaging for structural health monitoring applications. He is currently involved in developing algorithms for automatic identification and classification of defects in different materials using various imaging methods. He is also involved in software development for SHM applications and works frequently on developing LabVIEW codes for various applications. He was previously involved in modelling diffraction gratings on AFM cantilever beams for high resolution imaging and has worked on 3D modelling of sound propagation and distribution in fluid media.

Coupled models for functional materials and devices, Nanoscale optoelectronics and nanofabrication, Nanophotonics, electromechanical materials, integrated system design 

Research Descriptions:
Jagdish’s research involves studying and leveraging coupled effects in nanoscale photonic, optoelectronic, and electromechcanical materials and devices towards conception of efficient designs which are realized, in parallel, through development of unconventional multiscale fabrication processes. His more recent efforts are centered around development of IoT sensors, with a particular focus on the conception of new sensing strategies, energy harvesting system design, package design and functional testing, with applications spanning from industrial monitoring to environmental sensing.

Structural Health Monitoring using linear and non-linear elastic guided waves, laser Ultrasonics, Vibro-thermography

Research Descriptions:
Shashi is involved in computational modeling of plasticity and fracture in metals and composites subjected to hard body impact. He works on the development of finite element user subroutines in LS-DYNA framework. Modeling micro-mechanics based failure in composite materials subjected to high strain loading, which induces stiffness reduction followed by progressive damage accumulation. Finite element implementation of these models are under development in which energy based failure initiation followed the crack propagation using XFEM techniques are used. Objective of his research is to be able to predict complex mechanism of failure with minimum experimental data fitting and direct validation using macroscopic test samples. He is also working toward designing novel multifunctional composites in which smart materials and nano-composite material phases are intended to be used for improving material response under high velocity impact.

Research Descriptions:
Munian works on the simulation of ultrasonic waves in multi-layered laminated composite structures with applications of detection, characterization and quantification of defects in composite. He also works on the development of finite element user-defined subroutine in LS-DYNA framework for impact dynamic simulation for metallic as well as composite structures to capture the material failure due to high velocity impact load at elevated temperature.

He is also involved in design and manufacturing of Smart Manufacturing systems, IoT devices and Additive manufacturing characterization. He is also involved in projects related to mechanical characterization of RAS.

Research Descriptions:
Dakshayini is working on the next generation multi-functional composite manufacturing, testing, and characterization. She is currently involved in the additive manufacturing of various compositionally modified thermoplastic materials and investigating the multi-functional use of such composites. She works on the advanced manufacturing techniques of particulate based fabric composites that have applications majorly in the aerospace and automobile industry. She is involved in the synthesis of radar absorption materials and their microwave absorption characteristics. She also works on sensor design, manufacturing, and characterization for SHM related applications.

Research Descriptions:
Gopinath works in the field of structural and material design for next-generation aero-engines such as scramjets. His research is focused on aero-thermo-structural optimization of hypersonic vehicle, through integrated computational-experimental techniques. His research includes design, development, testing and qualification of novel thermal management concepts for extreme environment applications. He is also involved in establishing high temperature test facilities for performance evaluation of hypersonic vehicle airframe structural segments.

Aarthi is currently involved in a project on waterborne contaminants. She focuses on developing biological strategies for pathogen detection using state-of-art molecular techniques. Her experiments aim to comprehend the pathogen behavioral patterns and characteristics, contributing towards creating the biological parameters for effective detection techniques.
